| | Precision Dispensing Systems (PDS) is a small manufacturing company based
in Palmerston North New Zealand. In 1992 the company began developing a
Clean in Place (CIP) system for cleaning soft serve ice cream freezers
without disassembly. This system was sold to companies like McDonalds in
the UK and Brazil and Wendy's in Australia and New Zealand. This original
development and the experience of dealing with the food industry lead to
the development and design of a new pumping concept.
Anyone who needs to move liquids will be aware of the problems that exist
with conventional pumping methods that expose moving parts to product flow:
- Gears, seals, pistons and springs in the product flow can very quickly succumb to corrosion, or become blocked and refuse to operate.
- When used in a hygienic environment, or where one pump is used for a variety of liquids, these parts can be difficult to clean without disassembly.
- In some cases, peristaltic pumps have been used to try and address these issues, but poor tube life and containment are often cited as significant limiting factors.
WHAT IS INFLEX?
In the case of peristaltic pumps, liquids are driven by a series of rollers
squeezing a length of tube. In the case of Inflex, liquids are driven by
the action of pressure and vacuum applied to a tube shaped membrane. For
small flow and/or pressure applications, the pressure and vacuum
requirements are provided by air cylinders powered by servo's or small
electric motors. For larger flow and/or pressure applications, the pressure
and vacuum requirements are provided by suitable pressure and vacuum
pumps. This patented concept has shown remarkable performance
characteristics that significantly exceed present industry standards.
FEATURES OF INFLEX
- Long Life - Without rigid pushers or rollers tube pinching does not occur thereby achieving significantly longer tube life
- Containment - Product is contained within the housing if the tube fails
- Hygienic - Product contained within tube for hygienic easy clean operation
- Efficient - as the pump operates with very little friction, motive power efficiency is extremely high and battery operation becomes attractive
- Simple - No electronics or mechanical timing required
- Self priming - Good dry and wet priming
- Effective Valves - No siphoning
- Suction - the pump develops good suction aided by the vacuum on the inlet stroke. The level of suction can be altered by design
- Pressure - output pressure can be preset by stroke adjustment to the air cylinder. The output pressure is also limited by the drive pressure ensuring the pump and the equipment it may be attached to will not overload. No pressure switch is therefore required
- Volume - the dose volume may be altered by the stroke to air pump
- Run Dry - Without heat generation or abrasion, dry running can occur without damage
- Scalable - The pump can be easily scaled to meet specific needs or requirements
